    Is the missing file called "You.png"? I might be in .jpg format. Host it on imageshack or something.

    Yeah, there were files before but they needed to be erased so I could run even the editor. But this is the one I am using.

    I haven't used the editor much before now, as I haven't had need to place things precisely in the world.

    But I'm finding now that the editor crashes whenever I select an object to place that uses the polygon collision detection, such as a wall. This only happens on my mod, and it only seems to happen after I've added a new map.

    I managed to get around it once by loading another mod in the map editor, then loading my mod, and the polygon objects would work again. But after that, the editor would start to crash when I pressed F4 for the plot objects screen. And after that, my mod would not load normally.

    Any ideas?

    Check the identifiers in plot_objects, object_defs and polygons. Then check to see if any lines are missing.

    Nope I fixed the black square problem. I set the transparency (BTW, I didn't use Paint for that) and then it worked just fine. Well except for the fact that the creature is green instead of brown.

    Are you using Gimp? When saved as a .png the colours always work with Notrium.

    Dammit! No, it only made things worse! Now it just plain crashes! And no errors on the debug text I checked!

    So what do I do now? I don't know how to fix this situation!

    Two things you can do. The first is start over from scratch and this time make sure to backup your data files before you do anything risky with them and remember not to add too much too quickly or it becomes hell debugging it. You should only ever work on one thing at a time, don't get greedy adding feature after feature before you test even one. The second thing to do is start ripping out chunks of your data files, starting with what you suspect is causing the problem, but you might have already done this. If you've removed something that another one of the data files is referencing, that will cause Notrium to crash quite soundly.

    Works fine here. HTML version or PDF version, one of these should work I hope?

    Otherwise, find your Notrium folder and starts looking through the files in there to try and learn modding. All you need is a text editor (like Notepad++) and a graphics editor (like GIMP).

    Thanks, Aegis. I hadn't noticed polygons.dat. I had copied over the object_definitions.dat from default notrium, but not polygons.dat, so the entries for walls etc in the objects file was referencng entries in polygons.dat that weren't there.

    You don't need to download a program to begin modding, you only need to download something if you want to make/modify graphics. Windows comes with notepad, so you don't need any additional tools to mod something simple (or complicated, as long as you don't need to make graphics).

    Hi it's me again! Yup, same goddamn problem! The terrain won't load and the debug doesn't show any errors. The game and the editor crash! Is this just happening to me or are others experiencing these problems?I'm REALLY annoyed with this and my head fells like it's going to explode...

    If the editor or game doesn't load up at all, then that's a really good sign because you can see exactly which file stuffed up in the debug file, as it is the last entry.
    If that doesn't happen then you will be in a bit of a pickle. Try the good old move "end_of_file;" around the place to test which file stuffs the whole thing up.

    Thanks for the help Aegis, I found out the problem! It's amazing how the smallest problem can cause an entire crash! I figured out that I accidentally left an empty space between end_effects_block and end_of_file! With that fixed I shall continue my goal: The Creation of Infestation!

    EDIT: O.K maybe not. How do I get rid of those blue props in the Barebones mod? They're really annoying me and I don't know how to get rid of them. Where are they? In plot objects, items? I tried getting rid of them but the game keeps crashing!

    They're in object_definitions. The easiest way to get rid of them is to change it's image file to invisible.png. But a long term solution would be to edit the climate_types file and also change the blue orb to something you like more.

    Im trying to mod but Ive got several problems.

    1.armed Hermit with an rapid fire pistol and I have tested him in Hive, he started to shoot aliens and pwmed them.
    soon he stops firing at them and I wanna fix that, like he ran of ammo or something, how to fix that- unlimited ammo.

    2. How to change "creature's" health.

    3.I want to make marines to be controled like Hermit (ollow and guard mode).

    1. Did you change his weapon to rapid fire pistol? If so then the effects of the rapid fire pistol include losing bullets. The bullets are an item so it automatically belongs to you. So that means that the hermit ran out of your ammo. An obvious solution would be to change rapid fire pistol so that it doesn't take away any ammo (remove effect number 16 and condition number 0) but you could copy the weapon, change it's identifier and remove the ammo use.

    2. At the bottom of a creature there are it's speciality's. This is basically health, just change the numbers.

    This creature has 400 health.
    To change it's max health just:

    Now it has 100 health

    3. Go into the creatures.dat file and find the marine (identifier 14), and change the primary and secondary tactics to what you want. They are currently "0" and "9", looking under Ai_tactic.dat it shows that "0" is attack normally and "9" guard firm. So you probably want to change the "0" to a "5".

    I have a wieldable item that adds to a bar if the bar reaches 0. The problem is, I don't want this item to be equippable if the bar is already at 0. If I add a condition to the item that the bar must be greater than 0, then the item unequips when the bar reaches 0, which is not what I want.

    Any ideas?

    Edit: Never mind, I found a solution. I've just got the item auto-equipping as long as the bar is above 0, and there isn't another wieldable item already in the slot.

    Also make sure the marines are on the player's side, otherwise changing the tactics isn't very helpful.

    Hello again, I am a bit stuck and any help would be much appreciated...
    I want to create several 'races' with a choice of 'job' for each.
    Will i have to create each instance in races.dat or is there a way around this (I want each race-job combination to have weapons/items that can only be used by that race-job combination)
    I know notrium does this with races (e.g. That item can only be used by Human/Android) but how do i adapt this to race-job?

    I guess what i'm asking is: Is there any other way to limit item/weapon use excluding the creation of each combination in race.dat?

    You could do a workaround using the difficulty settings for the jobs, as long as you don't want more than three. You'd have to put some clear explanation in your readme file, and it's a pretty inelegant solution.

    I'd just use separate player races.

    Is there any known limit to the number of entries in player_races.dat? As (>2 'races' * 6 'jobs' = >12 entries)...

    There is a work around... I could give the player the only items he/she can use from the beginning but that would mean that i couldn't leave items around the map that are race-job specific..


    P.S. I haven't started coding yet but i have the ideas down on paper, can any of the more experienced modders tell me if my ideas are too difficult/impossible.

    Warrior - uses close combat weaponry: swords, etc.
    Archer - uses ranged combat weaponry: bows, arrows, etc.
    Mage - uses combat spells: elemental magic, etc.
    Druid - uses Mortar & Pestle to make powders that can heal/harm
    Summoner - calls forth powerful magical entities to battle for him/her, but is physically weak
    Alchemist - almost similar to Summoner but instead of using power to summon, Alchemist uses materials to forge 'golems'

    I don't need help or anything just a helpful yes/no/way too difficult, etc

    Thanks a lot guys/gals. Got any advice on inventory use?

    Let me explain my idea: I want the player to start in map: Hall Of Knowledge
    There will be (hopefuly) ten or so objects at intervals along the walls which when Used/Opened open a (so far) unused inventory containing five items:

    Item 1: Question
    Item 2-5: Multiple choice answer

    If the player answers correctly i.e. Uses the correct answer item. A useful item e.g. potion or ether is deposited in menu 0 (I think that's the player inventory.)

    Good idea/Bad idea/Impossible?
