... Welcome to "Thread Title Goes Here", that one thread on the Instant Kingdom forums that Anonymous1157 hijacks whenever he has something meaningless to say!

So I've been playing my Steam games on Linux, with the actual Steam client for Linux, and overall, it's... exactly the same thing as on other platforms, really. It takes just as (unreasonably) long to start Steam, it seems like it uses slightly more CPU for itself than on Windows, and the user experience is basically identical. Also, it changes my mouse cursor to the lefty version. What the hell.

The games themselves all run about as well as they would on Windows. Except I don't remember Team Fortress 2 being twelve gigabytes. It's going to take me four hundred thousand hours to d-- You know what? Never mind.

Speaking of steam on linux, that was the first thing I got working under my fresh install of LUbuntu on my fresh new netbook (high time I got started with linux). Then I proceeded to immediately kill said netbook. Somehow. By opening the back panel, LOOKING at the ram module, and then closing it again.

How is that even bloody possible?

(okay so yes Im fishing for tech support but come on, the damm thing TURNS ON but the screen stays black how does that even WORK and Ive asked google and apparently this is a thing that happens but for most people a CMOS reset fixed it and for me it didnt and aaargh)
    #
    Anonymous1157 11 years ago
This is obvious, but if you haven't already tried it, reseat the RAM. I have a spare laptop for my spare laptop (/me puts on a pair of deal-with-it sunglasses) and I got a black screen trying to start it up, which was miraculously fixed when I removed and reinstalled the RAM.

... Oh, and now that I've resized my unshrinkable XFS home partition to make room for TF2, the damned game can't even use my OpenGL drivers.
    #
    Pete 11 years ago
I did, twice (as well as try a different module, and reboot it a dozen times both on battery and AC power, leave it on no power for half an hour, three different methods that should have put it in factory default and booting into ExpressGate). At this point Im just gonna hand the thing in before (hopefully) I do something stupid and void the warranty.
    #
    Anonymous1157 11 years ago
It's still in warranty? Oh! That's different. You should have thought of returning it sooner.

... In other news, A LOT of people are having trouble running TF2 on Linux under A LOT of different hardware and software configurations. It all boils down to whether or not Steam thinks your OpenGL implementation is 2.0.0-spec. Apparently, Mesa only does OpenGL 1.4. *Headdesk*

Edit: Rather, my card only does OpenGL 1.4. I THINK that's what's really happening. Which is rather displeasing, 'cause the same game runs on the same hardware in Windows.

Ooo, I almost went one month without posting random crap in the random thread. New record.

I'm trying out Origin because-- Oh, I know what you're thinking. NOTHING could make a Steam user try Origin. They're two competing DRM systems!

SimCity is an EA game. Damn it.

So, anyways, I'm trying out Origin. If EA did one thing right, it's making the Origin client feel faster than the Steam client. Everything else is a mixed bag, IMO. The client settings window looks a lot like Steam's, which may/not be a good thing. The "My Games" screen looks weird because I don't actually have any games. It looks like you can buy cross-platform games on any supported platform from inside Origin, too, but you have to buy each copy separately and they may be priced differently. It'd be perfect if they charged you once for a license, and then nominal fees for physical copies. So close.

One interesting note, though. Origin is actually a Qt application, and the About screen contains a rather peculiar section about mailing them a SASE and a blank CD and getting the LGPL portion of the source code back in the mail. Since they're clearly trying to copy Steam with their own twist, I wonder if there's any chance we'll see a Linux Origin at some point. (Edit: We won't. They don't support Origin on Mac. It was hard to find where they explicitly say that.)

Edit: I've got this older email account that consistently delivers mail anywhere from 6 to 24 hours late, with spam tending to arrive extremely fast and legitimate mail arriving extremely late. Yeah, I don't get it, either. Anyhow, there appears to be no way to change one's email address on an Origin account. EA has a help forum with dozens of change-of-email requests with zero replies.

Provided that one is not interested in exclusives, customer service may actually be the defining feature that makes Steam a better choice than Origin. All you have to do is attach at least one retail game to Steam, so you'll have an activation key card to write your support number and scan in, and you're good for any account support, ever. Helped me bunches when I changed THAT account's email for the same reason.

Note to self: LXDE will happily run on 192 megabytes of RAM with plenty to spare. KDE will suicide by hard drive burnout. (I redid an old virtual machine and forgot to add RAM. It's been ten minutes and the background just appeared.)

In unrelated news, the forum has been logging me out constantly lately. Fix it, fix it, fix it, fix it!
    #
    Amarth 11 years ago
Yeah, the logging out thing is the same for me but it has been going on since the start. It also doesn't seem to properly keep track of which posts you have read and which you haven't. Might be it only goes wrong when you open posts in other tabs.

In other news, no ponies for a goddamn long time. OTOH, next month has Heart of the Swarm, Bioshock Infinite and Doctor Who!

Oh, and Driftmoon in a week! Yay!

You think thats bad, I once spawned on a tiny 16 squares island with zero trees. Had to swim towards a distant island barely in sight range to get my hands on even that single solitary tree.

And then I rode off on a boat and died in the distance before I could set up a spawn point. Good thing I did plant a sapling before leaving, I suppose.
    #
    Anonymous1157 11 years ago
I was tired of my little island, with its underwater coal deposits and whatnot, so I just took a boat out in a straight line for an entire game-day to find land. Guess what I found?

    ...

    ANOTHER small island.

This game is deliberately making itself hard on me. And I like it. *Keeps playing*

Edit: I went five kilometers before running into a decent archipelago, then got lost when I went back. Now I'm in a swamp in the middle of I-don't-know-where. I'm gonna get a mapper and figure out what the hell I did wrong.

Edit 2: Map generated! I RAN PAST IT ON MY WAY BACK WRAAUGH

Edit 3: The problem with having a base that is at least partially underwater, or just located in the middle of a deep ocean, is that you'll drown (probably more than once) while trying to get your stuff back after dying. On a related note, is it just me, or do armored mobs tend to spawn as part of big packs?

I just discovered that specifically every single JPG and PNG (Some were suffixed apng or jpeg and weren't touched) has been completely wiped out from my pictures folder.

    ... What the bleep?

Maybe someone thought they were porn and deleted them? I read somewhere some silly guide to how to find out if someone has porn in their computer and it included searching for all jpg and avi files and made it seem like there can't be any other reason for too many of them.

Nobody but myself ever uses this computer, so that can't be it. (Nor do they want to, 'cause they all use Windows.) What's really fascinating is that whatever it was wiped out my wallpapers the same way soon afterwards, which are in their own folder.

This is really suspicious, but I don't know who or what could have done it. It doesn't seem to have happened again, so I'm just going to call it a freaky one-off event and pretend nothing happened. And disable ssh. And samba shares. Actually, maybe I should disable smbd+nmbd too.

I've been working on a new game (which may or may not become my Month entry for One Game A Month, depending on whether or not I ever wind up with something playable before the end of the month), and coming up with various design ideas has been so exciting I thought I'd share a small piece of what I've been working on:

    INTRO:
    - '\t[background-choice]'
    - ['\t[peacekeeper]', BSTORY_1]
    - ['\t[pirate]', BSTORY_2]
    BSTORY_1:
    - '\t[backstory-peacekeeper]'
    - ['\t[yes]', INTRO_1]
    - ['\t[no]', INTRO]
    BSTORY_2:
    - '\t[backstory-pirate]'
    - ['\t[yes]', INTRO_2]
    - ['\t[no]', INTRO]
    INTRO_1:
    - - [SET_VAR, backstory, 1]
    - '\t[intro-peacekeeper]'
    - ['\t[happy-underway]', INTRO_1_1]
    - ['\t[impatient-with-command]', INTRO_1_2]
    - ['\t[hate-new-denmark]', INTRO_1_3]

This is the start of intro.dlg, a dialogue branch file. The .dlg files will eventually handle every conversation that can take place in the game (which there should be a lot of, if I end up with the game I'm planning on!). The seemingly-bizarre "\t[]" stuff is referencing localization file tags, so whatever language you're playing in (just English right now... especially considering I don't have a game to play yet ), the dialogue trees use exactly the same logic.

There was this project called QuestML; you might want to take a peek at it and possibly shamelessly steal some design choices or whatever.
I actually don't know how well-done that platform is.

So, yeah. Yesterday night I didn't sleep because I was busy implementing a simple rk4 integrator, and then deriving (by hand!) two differential equations describing a system I wanted to simulate.
Then wrote that simulation. It works! Never had thought that I would use that whole deriving-by-hand thing I learnt a semester ago.

Also, I apparently have too much free time on my hands. Except I don't.

I know that feel. I procrastinate all the time, and don't do anything useful with the time I free. Yay!

(It's actually not fun at all. I'm trying to do something about it.)

Well, one could argue that I deepened my understanding of rigid body physics. That's something, right?

Three months ago or so, I gave my semi-expensive headphones (broken - I don't exactly remember what the problem was, but the sound was distorted) to a friend, because he has stuff for soldering. I totally forgot about that, but today I got them back, fixed - and DUDES, does a solid pair of headphones make a difference! To think that up until a quarter hour ago I was okay with crappy earbuds...

He said it's for free, but he's totally at least getting a dinner for the service.

    Anonymous1157 11 years ago
I have a pair of relatively cheap but surprisingly good headphones. The cable was frayed in a dozen places when I got them, so I replaced it with a jack.

    BEST. MOD. EVER.

Mmm. It's actually used quite often in higher mathematics, but I believe most people know it by another name.

It's very often used pretty much everywhere. I'm sad I only realized it at 2:30.

Except digamma actually represented 6, since it used to be the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet.

Still, laughed pretty hard at "there's more than one way to represent it as an infinite decimal."

Yeah, you probably saw that one coming.

Adobe just released a completely empty font that actually serves a useful purpose, and that's NOT an April Fools joke. Why didn't anyone think of it before?
